Eintracht Frankfurt are the new champions of the 2022 UEFA Europa League.

The Germans defeated Rangers FC 5-4 on penalties after the tie ended 1-1 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium in Seville on Wednesday night.

This is the first time Eintracht Frankfurt have won a European Cup competition in 42 years. Their last victory came in 1980 when they defeated rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach on away goals to win the UEFA Cup.

Frankfurt may not have a history of African participation quite as celebrated as that of other top clubs, but some fine players from the continent have starred in the team in the past.

In this feature, Sports Brief profiles the 4 greatest African players to have featured for the Eagles.

Tony Yeboah

During his time with Eintracht Frankfurt, Tony Yeboah proved himself as one of the most devastating forwards in German football.

On two occasions with Frankfurt, he was the Bundesliga’s top scorer in 1993 and 1994.

Yeboah became the first African Bundesliga club captain. He was a pacy, powerful operator who also knew how to employ finesse when the situation called for it.

Yeboah played for the Eagles between 1990 to 1995, scoring 68 goals in 123 appearances.

Austin Jay Jay Okocha

The skilful midfielder signed for Frankfurt from Borussia Neunkirchen in December 1991.

The Nigerian icon formed a fearsome combo with legendary Ghanaian forward Tony Yeboah during his four-year stay with the club.

His major highlight for Frankfurt was a goal he scored against Karlsruher SC, dribbling three players in the penalty box and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.

The goal was voted as 1993 Goal of the Season by many football magazines in Germany.

Kevin-Prince Boateng

Another Ghanaian, Boateng, joined Frankfurt during the 2017/18 campaign. His impressive performances at AC Milan and Las Palmas persuaded Niko Kovač to add him to his already star-studded forward.

Boateng’s great versatility turned him into a reliable backup option at Deutsche Bank Park. The Ghanaian played both as an attacking midfielder and a forward, but Kovac even used him as a winger at times.

In his first season, Kevin-Prince Boateng helped Frankfurt to win the German DFB Pokal, beating Bayern Munich 3-1 in the finals.

He was handed a starting role by his manager Niko Kovac. He played a part in putting his side into the lead in just 11 minutes when he set up Ante Rabic to score the first goal.

Boateng later said winning the German Cup was his greatest success in football.

Rolf-Christel Guié-Mien

Born in Brazzaville, Congolese midfielder Guié-Mien joined Frankfurt from Karlsruher in 1999 in Bundesliga 2.

Frankfurt were forced into arranging cooking classes for Rolf-Christel Guié-Mien's wife, as a part of the midfielder's deal with the club.

He was insistent that his wife take up those classes to help him settle into German football.

Guié-Mien quickly became a key player in the team's plans, scoring 19 goals in 95 matches during his three-year stay with Frankfurt.

However, Guié-Mien left Frankfurt in 2002 to Bundesliga promotion-challengers SC Freiburg.

German-Born Ghanaian Winger Ansgar Knauff Wins Europa League Cup With Frankfurt

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Germany-born forward of Ghanaian descent Ansgar Knauff has won the 2021/22 Europa League title with Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 20-year-old was influential for Oliver Glasner's side as they defeated Rangers FC 5-4 on penalties after the tie ended 1-1 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium in Seville.

Knauff, who is on loan from Borussia Dortmund, played the entire duration of the game when they locked horns with the Scottish giants in the final of this season’s Europa League.
