Having missed the 2018 World cup, the Black Stars are back after eight years with a young and promising squad. They are among the five teams representing Africa in the prestigious football tournament. Ghana produced one of the most memorable performances by an African team in the 2010 World Cup when they reached the quarter-finals. Ghana's World Cup 2022 squad also consists of European-based players.

The Black Stars had a disappointing 2022 AFCON campaign and replaced head coach Milovan Rajevac with former international player Otto Addo. Fortunately, they were able to have a turnaround by eliminating Nigeria and booking a ticket to Qatar. Ghana's Black Stars squad for the World Cup has been released and includes a wealth of talents.

Otto Addo released his 26-man squad ahead of the tournament on 14 November 2022. He was one of the last coaches to announce his final list of players. The team was reduced from the initial 55-man provisional squad named on 2 November 2022.

Top names in Ghana's national football team include Arsenal's Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew of Crystal Palace and Leicester City's Daniel Amartey. Former Spain international Inaki Williams, who plays for Athletic Bilbao, is another exciting inclusion.

Joseph Paintsil and Jeffrey Schlupp will miss out on the trip to the Middle East. Other surprising exclusions include RSC Anderlecht midfielder Majeed Ashimeru and former AS Roma youngster Felix Afena-Gyan.

Is Gyan going to the 2022 World Cup?

The Black Stars' all-time top scorer has been in the headlines following his rumoured return to the national team. However, in a recent interview, he cleared the air concerning his future with the team.

"I never said I will play for Black Stars, I was misquoted." Asamoah Gyan said. "But if people need me and there's motivation, why not, I can risk and come."

Gyan played at three consecutive World Cups for his nation. However, he is not part of the Ghana 26-man squad for the World Cup 2022 list.

Who will be the captain of Ghana in 2022?

Veteran midfielder Andrew Ayew will captain the Blackstars as the most capped player in the team. Ayew took over the armband of the national team in May 2019, replacing Gyan. The Qatar-based midfielder is also the only player from Ghana's 2010 squad heading to Qatar.

Otto Addo is the current head coach of the team. He is a German-born former winger who played for several European sides, including Borussia Dortmund, Mainz, Hamburg, Hannover and Hamburg. The tactician spent 16 years in his career and earned 15 caps for the national team.

Ghana's technical team consist of former Premier League manager Chris Hughton. He adds his vast experience managing clubs like Newcastle, Norwich City, and Brighton.

Addo will probably field a strong squad with a 4-1-4-1 formation to help his team dominate the midfield. Utilizing the wings will also be at the top of his agenda, especially with Inaki Williams' fast pace. Thomas Partey can also offer good protection to the defence as a lone defensive midfielder.

Ghana's World Cup group

The African giants play in one of the most challenging groups in the tournament (group H) alongside Portugal, South Korea and Uruguay. The four teams will fight for the top two slots to advance to the knockout stage.

Ghana's World Cup 2022 fixtures

One of the most anticipated fixtures for the Black Stars is against Uruguay. The South American side left a bitter taste in Ghanaian fans after disappointingly eliminating them in the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup. Will this be a revenge mission for Ghana?

Ghana's first match will be against Portugal on 24 November 2022 at Stadium 974 before facing South Korea on 28 November at Education City Stadium. Their last group game will be against Uruguay on 2 December at Al Janoub Stadium.

Ghana's World Cup 2022 jersey

The Black Stars will wear white jerseys for home matches and red for away games. Their white jerseys also feature colours of the Ghanaian flag on the cuffs. Meanwhile, the away shirt is mainly red with a slightly darker central vertical stripe on the front. Puma's logo sits inside the strip and is yellow. It is also present on each sleeve.

Ghana's World Cup squad in 2022 has the potential to reach the knockouts for the third time in their history. The Black Stars made it to the Round of 16 in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2010.
