When was Atletico Madrid founded? The club was founded on 26 April 1903, as Athletic Club Sucursal de Madrid by three Basque students. The three founders saw the new club as a youth branch of their childhood team, Athletic Bilbao. In 1904, they were joined by dissident members of Real Madrid and began playing in blue and white halved shirts.

However, as time passed, Bilbao and Atletico Madrid's team kits were eventually changed to red and white stripes. Some of Atletico's fans believe that the club changed its colours because that colour combination was cheaper to make. Consequently, the club was nicknamed Los Colchoneros.
