With one of the most loyal fan bases you can find out there, Ulinzi Stars players have been putting up a fierce front to not end up on the bottom of the league table. Who are Ulinzi Stars F.C.? If one may ask? It is the football sports team representing the Kenya Defence Forces.

Ulinzi Stars FC history

Before 1995, there were three outfits representing Kenya's military in the top flight of Kenyan sports: Scarlet, kahawa and waterworks. Scarlet and Kahawa made the most appearences in these leagues and competitions.

After the formation, Ulinzi stars FC have been competing in the Kenya Premier League ever since. The team also doubles up as the Country's Military football team representing Kenya in all the Military games regionally in Africa and the world.

Ulinzi Stars FC's achievements

At the beginning of the millennium, the team gained strength and put up quite a good front in its Kenya Premier league campaigns. This led to it winning the League in three consecutive years: 2003, 2004 and 2005. Unfortunately, after that, it would be another five years in 2010 when Ulinzi Stars would win the League again.

In 2011 the team did come in second in the League but went ahead to win the inaugural KPL top 8 cup in a heartwarming victory against Western Stima.

They have also made appearances in the CAF Champions League twice: 2004 and 2011 but were eliminated in the group stages.

Ulinzi Stars FC’s stadium

KDF Ulinzi calls Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, Kenya home ground. The facility was opened in 1948 and has a capacity of 8,200 seats.

However early 2021, the facility was handed over to a contractor set to undergo a $6.5 million upgrade. It is meant to be fitted with new ultra-modern facilities that conform to modern international standards.

The renovations are intended to be implemented in three phases running in five years. Meanwhile, the team temporarily plays its home matches at the Nakuru ASK showground.

In the recently concluded mid-seasons transfers of February 2022, Ulinzi Stars added four new signings into their squad. They are as follows:

  • Shannel Mwakwata, a left-back from Strathmore F.C.
  • Stephen Etyiang Odima attacking Midfielder from Kakamega Homeboyz F.C.
  • Antonio Abwao Ogaro Offensive Midfielder from KCB F.C.

Ulinzi Stars’ captain

At the team's helm, the captainship is being held by James Saruni. The goalkeeper who has been selected to the National team Harambee Stars on several occasions has been the team's captain for over four years.

The goalkeeper bagged the prestigious FKF PL Golden Gloves award for the 2020/21 season. Saruni is also philanthropic, for he has an academy in Nakuru where he natures young talents when he is off the pitch.

Who is Ulinzi Star's coach?

Since 2010 the military man Benjamin Nyangweso has been heading the team on an on and off basis. Last season he was redeployed on military duties and left the team's coaching under its former captain Stephen Ocholla. Benjamin has since returned to the team as of February 2022.

Coach Nyangweso is the one that led the team in clinching their third KPL title in 2010, a feat that he is hopeful of replicating this year.

Ulinzi Stars F.C. world ranking

As per the latest KPL standings, the team ranks in the 13th position with 21 points, just above Bidco united, who come in at the 14th position with 20 points.

In terms of the latest world rankings, Ulinzi stars rank at position 1119 as per the latest FBDB reports released on 7 February 2022, which is one of the highest positions the team has risen to in the recent past.

Last year and the beginning of the 2020/21 season was terrible for Ulinzi Stars players, but there seems to be some optimism and renewal of spirits amongst its players and fans alike. The return of Coach Nyangweso brought this about. To top it all, the new signings might bring a much-needed breath of fresh air into the team.
