The team was initially referred to as the National Azingo, but in 2000, their federation decided to change to the Panthers. The country even unveiled a black panther as the official mascot of the 2017 Afcon tournament to symbolize its commitment to environmental protection.
Gabon's national football team captain, Aubameyang, is also known for using black panther masks to celebrate his goals.
Has Gabon ever made the world cup?
The Panthers have never qualified for the world cup despite playing several qualifiers. However, they have played in seven Africa Cup of Nations (1994, 1996, 2000, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2021). The best Gabon's national football team's Afcon performance came in 1996 and 2012 when they reached the quarters.
The Panthers, who co-hosted the 2012 Afcon alongside Equatorial Guinea, started well by winning all three games in Group C comprising Tunisia, Morocco, and Niger. However, they lost to Mali in the quarters. In 2017, their campaign ended with a disappointing exit in the group stage.
