Soccer was introduced in the Central African country in 1897. However, the Gabonese Football Federation was established in 1962. The country's football continued to develop while they participated in various competitions. In 1985, they outshined Congo 3-0 in the UDEAC Cup to lift their first title in history.

The team was initially referred to as the National Azingo, but in 2000, their federation decided to change to the Panthers. The country even unveiled a black panther as the official mascot of the 2017 Afcon tournament to symbolize its commitment to environmental protection.
Gabon's national football team captain, Aubameyang, is also known for using black panther masks to celebrate his goals.
Has Gabon ever made the world cup?
The Panthers have never qualified for the world cup despite playing several qualifiers. However, they have played in seven Africa Cup of Nations (1994, 1996, 2000, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2021). The Panthers, who co-hosted the 2012 Afcon alongside Equatorial Guinea, started well by winning all three games in Group C comprising Tunisia, Morocco, and Niger. However, they lost to Mali in the quarters. In 2017, their campaign ended with a disappointing exit in the group stage.
