Sierra Leone national football team

They have had a successful run in different competitions in the '90s, with their last cup coming in 1995. The cup they won was the Amilcar Cabral Cup. This competition is only for the West African nations. They have an excellent run so far in AFCON in 2022, having drawn against Algeria and Ivory Coast, who are solid teams. This appearance is their first in over 20 years.

They have a 28 man squad with an average age of 25 years. The team consists of three goalkeepers, two centre-backs, four left-backs, two right-backs, three defensive midfielders, three central midfielders, two left-wingers, two right-wingers and seven centre forwards. The players are:

They are ranked at number 108 worldwide as of December 2021. Their highest ranking ever was 50 on August 14th 2014. Their lowest ever ranking was 172 on September 19th 2007.

Sierra Leone national football team AFCON

They are back in the competition after more than 20 years of absence. They have started their campaign with two draws against Algeria and Ivory Coast. They have their last group match against Equitorial Guinea on January 29th 2022. They hope to win the game and have a chance at qualifying for the knockout stages.

Their team captain is Umaru Bangura. He plays as a centre-back. He was born on October 7th 1987, and plays for Switzerland's Neuchatel Xamax in the second tier challenge league. The skipper has had the most appearances, with 54 appearances.

Their coach is John Keister. He was appointed coach in August 2020. He was their coach for a while before but was suspended in May 2017. This suspension was because of a recording of him criticizing SLFA's president. He was born on November 11th 1970, in Manchester, England. He hopes to lead Sierra Leone to glory. On his reinstatement, he was quoted saying,

"It feels great to be back. I think what we're going to look at now is transition which is my immediate goal."

He made public his plans of rebuilding the team. He said,

"We had a national team that have done well, but obviously ageing. So we're bringing in a fresh group of players, that's not to say I'm going to get rid of everyone in the last national team. But we need to fresh up things a little bit more compare to the last time I was in charge."

He was successful in his club coaching career after leading East EndLions to a Premier League title without losing a match. Before coaching, he was a footballer player and played as a midfielder. He also played for the national team.

They have three Jerseys that represent their national colours. Their jerseys have one colour from top to bottom. The first colours are blue, then white for the second and green for the third.

Sierra Leone national football team suspension

In 2018, they were suspended by Fifa from any competitions. They were banned because of government interference by removing the association president and the general secretary.

Fifa was quoted saying,

"The Bureau of the FIFA Council decided today to suspend the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) with immediate effect due to government interference."

This suspension was unfortunate and came when they prepared for the AFCON qualifier match against Ghana on October 11th 2018.

After a long spell away from AFCON, the Sierra Leone national football team is back and hopes to make a name for themselves. They have not lost a match in AFCON yet, but they have not won one either. However, they have young players, and their coach hopes to take them to victory.
