John grew up playing soccer and lacrosse, his uncle being his mentor. He attended St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School and lived a few blocks from Sam Gagner, who later joined the Edmonton Oilers, and the two developed a friendship. Gagner's father, Dave Gagner, built a backyard ice rink where Tavares spent much of his time honing his skills.

Being a promising hockey player, he played with older children before joining the Mississauga Braves of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) in the 1998-99 season. He then moved to the Mississauga Senators, then the Toronto Marlboros in the 2003-04 season, where he led them to the championship and was named the tournament's top forward.

In the following season, he joined the Marlboros minor midget team, where he shared the Buck Houle Award with Bryan Cameron on their ice performance, leadership, and loyalty. In the same season, while only 13 years, he joined the Milton Icehawks, making him one of the youngest players ever to play junior hockey.

In the spring of 2005, John petitioned to join the junior Ontario Hockey League (OHL) at 14 years, where only 15-year-olds or older were allowed. He joined the Oshawa Generals as selected as the first pick in the draft, earning him the Jack Ferguson Award. Tavares played exceptionally well and was named to the OHL's all-rookie team.

He also won the Emms Family Award and CHL Rookie of the Year awards as the top first-year OHL and CHL player. He went on to win other awards before he was traded to the London Knights.

What year was John Tavares drafted? The 2009 NHL Draft class was led by Tavares, who was the first overall selection by the New York Islanders. He went on to sign a three-year, entry-level contract making a debut on the team in a game against the Edmonton Oilers.

After that, he had an amazing streak in the team where he later became the alternate captain, then captain, and extended his stay with the Islanders by signing a new six-year $33 million contract through to the end of the 2017-18 season.
