Mark Scheifele's biography and career

He grew up playing minor hockey for the Kitchener Jr. Rangers rep program in the Alliance Pavilion League in his hometown of Kitchener, Ontario. He began his career as a defenseman before being converted to the forward position.

Mark stated he wore the number 55 in minor hockey because he wanted to be like his elder brother Kyle. He went to Grand River Collegiate Institute for high school and competed in volleyball, basketball, badminton, and track and field.

Mark started focusing on hockey when he was 16 years of age. However, following his minor midget season in 2008-09, he was picked in the seventh round of the 2009 OHL Priority Selection by the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

He did not make their roster, though, and was transferred to his native Kitchener Dutchmen Jr.B. club for a year of seasoning in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (OHA). During his time with the Dutchmen, he began to get the attention of institutions that offered him NCAA scholarships.

Scheifele participated in the Winnipeg Jets' training camp and exhibition games before the 2011-12 season. He also stated that he would wear jersey number 55 because his preferred number 19, 19, had been taken by Jim Slater. Mark Scheifele's current team is Winnipeg Jets.

During the preseason, he earned the first star after scoring two goals and two assists in an exhibition game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. On October 3, 2011, the Jets announced that they had signed him to an entry-level deal and that he would begin the season on Winnipeg's NHL roster.

He made his NHL debut on October 6, 2011, and scored his first career NHL goal on October 19, 2011, against Toronto Maple Leafs' James Reimer. After that, he was sent to the OHL and rejoined the Barrie Colts after seven games to continue his development.

Jake Evans scored an empty-net goal in the final minute of Game 1 in Winnipeg to put the Canadiens ahead 5-3. Following Evans' goal, Scheifele smacked him with a hard check, knocking the Canadiens forward out cold.

Evans was taken off the ice on a stretcher after suffering a concussion. Scheifele was suspended for four games by the NHL for a "high, predatory hit."
