Luka Modric's biography

Luka's father, Stipe, was an aeromechanic, while his mother, Radojka, worked as a textile worker. They were refugees who had fled from Serbian oppressors during the Bosnian War.

Luka Modric's family was among the affected people displaced from their homes. Serbian rebels executed his grandfather, and his home burned down.

Despite the circumstances, the midfielder did not give up. Luka used to play basketball and handball while in school before settling for football. He worked hard to develop his soccer skills despite having a short and tiny body.

Early career

Luka began playing football at NK Zadar as a young kid. He then joined Dinamo Zagreb's youth team in 2001 at 16 years of age. After that, the Croatian was loaned out to Zrinjski Mostar in 2002, where he did not disappoint.

His brilliance earned him the player of the season award in the Bosnian league. He was further loaned out to Inter Zapresic in 2004.

After scoring 12 goals in 40 matches for Zrinjski and Zapresic, Luka returned to Zagreb and signed a 10-year contract with the club. The midfielder scored 7 goals in 31 matches and helped Dinamo Zagreb win the league in the 2005-06 season.

He scored six and assisted 10 as Zagreb defended their league title the following season. He also won the Prva HNL Player of the Year award. Modric became the team's captain and helped them qualify for the UEFA Cup.

However, they were knocked out in the group stages. Dinamo Zagreb went on to win the league title and the Croatian Cup.

The midfielder joined English Premier League side Tottenham for $21.6 million. He led Spurs to its first UEFA Champions League appearance in 50 years.

His first goal for Tottenham came in a 2-2 draw against Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Cup group stage match on 18 December 2008. He scored 17 goals in 160 matches during his four seasons at the club but did not win any trophy.

He moved to Real Madrid in August 2012 for an estimated fee of $38.2 million and signed a five-year contract. His Real career kicked off on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Barcelona in the Supercopa de Espana final, just a few hours after signing.
