Yaya began his football career with the Ivorian club ASEC Mimosas’ youth side, where after spending four years with the junior team, he made his debut with the senior side at the age of 17. Right from the start, he was determined and stood out. His fearlessness and determination paid off when his club won the Ivorian Premier Division.

His performances attracted the attention of European scouts, and from there, he joined the Belgian club, Beveren. After two years with the club, he caught Arsene Wenger's attention and was called for a trial at Arsenal in 2003. Arsenal was keen on signing him, but he failed to obtain a work permit, and due to frustrations, he joined the Ukrainian club Metalurh Donetsk.

He had stints with Olympiacos and Monaco before moving to Barcelona in 2007. He played over 100 matches and was part of the 2009 historic Barcelona team that won six trophies in one year.

In 2010, he moved to the Premier League club Manchester City, where he was one the critical players in helping the club lift its Premier League title after 44 years.

After Man City, he had a short stint with Olympiacos before finally joining the Chinese club Qingdao Football Club for one year, and then retiring from playing football to become a coach.
