The Premier League player of the month award is a recognition given to the best athlete in the league in that particular month. Since its inception in 1994, the award is very much coveted, with the likes of Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane bagging the most. Currently known as the EA Sports player of the month, the award was previously known as the Barclays Player of the Month from 2004 to 2016. It has been among the most honourable achievements in the EPL, alongside the Manager of the Month and Manager of the Season trophies. Premier League Player of the Month

Every 30 days of each EPL season, an athlete from any team in the top league is chosen to be the best. However, he is selected by a combined group of people, making the ruling fair to any outstanding athlete at that particular moment during the season. The voters include an online public vote, a panel of experts and the captain of each Premier League club.

This award was brought to existence in the 1994/95 season alongside the Manager of the Month award. This was two years after the Premier League’s debut season as members of the First Division resigned from the Football League. The move led the clubs to set up a new commercially independent league with powers to negotiate its broadcast and sponsorship agreements.

However, the Manager of the month and Manager of the Year awards were introduced previously in the 1993/94 season. These are strictly for the managers but use the same criteria as the Player of the Month to select the best Manager. The first award was awarded to Tottenham Hotspur’s Jürgen Klinsmann for his performance in August 1994.

Who votes for Premier League Player of the Month?

The voters include the online public, whose contribution accounts for 10% of the total votes. It also consists of a panel of experts selected by the league and the captain of each team in the EPL. The award has been shared by multiple athletes on six occasions, while Manchester United has won the most compared to any other club in the competition.

Who was the Premier League Player of the Month?

In January 2023, the award went to Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford. He played incredibly well during the period, including his role in the 2-1 victory against Manchester City on 14 January. This is the second time he has been crowned the title this season, having also clenched it after his outstanding performance in September 2022.

Who has won the most Player of the Month trophies?

Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero holds the record for the most awards with a joint record of seven. Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane has also won the trophy seven times. However, as Harry Kane is still active in the competition, he seems to surpass Kun Aguero soon.

The Premier League Player of the Month is an honourable award granted to a contestant in the EPL every 30 days of the season. It has existed over decades, giving fans a chance to select their best athlete throughout the period, amongst many others. With the selection criteria, it is a non-biased competition and is truthfully granted to the proper sportsman.
