Diego Alonso has coached a number of teams during his stellar career, winning numerous awards along the way, and it is no surprise that the Uruguay national team offered him the top managerial position. The South American met a team in shambles and was able to organize it to the point of securing a chance at the World Cup in Qatar. Alonso has extensive club coaching experience, having earlier coached Penarol and Bella Vista in his native Uruguay, as well as Olimpia and Guarani in Paraguay. His longest coaching tenure was with Pachuca, a Mexican club he led to the Mexican championship in 2016. With Pachuca and Monterrey, he also won the CONCACAF Champions League.

The coach started coaching in 2011 and is now guiding Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani to their final World Cup. The following is a list of all of the teams he has coached.

He made his pro debut with C.A. Bella Vista, where he stayed for four seasons. In 1997, the veteran assisted the team in winning the second division title.

After briefly playing for Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata in Argentina, Alonso moved to Spain, where he spent five years with five different clubs: Valencia CF, Atlético Madrid, Racing de Santander, Málaga C.F., and Real Murcia. He also spent a year in Mexico with Club Universidad Nacional.

He scored 22 goals for Atlético Madrid in the second division in 2001-02, helping the Colchoneros return to La Liga. During those days, he formed an effective attacking partnership with his countryman Fernando Correa.

Alonso, now 47, returned to his homeland in 2006 and joined his hometown club, Club Nacional de Football. However, he soon returned to China, signing with Shanghai Shenhua F.C. in the Chinese Super League. He later spent two seasons with Gimnasia before moving to Penarol.

In five years, Alonso made seven appearances for Uruguay's national team. He made his debut in a 3-2 friendly win over Paraguay in Ciudad del Este on June 17, 1999.

Alonso was named to the national squad for the 1999 Copa América and scored in the quarter-final penalty shootout (5-3 win) for the eventual runners-up, also against the hosts, Paraguay. Despite his amazing 2001-02 season with Atlético, he was not selected for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and later chastised the then manager Víctor Púa.
