He began his career with Sporting de Gijón, a local club. At the club, he was named "Lucho" after Mexican forward Luis Flores.

He then spent the majority of his playing career with the two biggest Spanish clubs, first Real Madrid for five seasons, before joining their fierce rivals at Camp Nou on a free transfer in 1996. During his eight years at Barcelona, he eventually became team captain and scored several times against his former club in El Clásico. He also represented Spain in three World Cups and one European Championship.

Enrique began his career as a manager for Barcelona B in 2008. Three years later, he moved to Roma.

As a manager, the Spaniard won La Liga twice, first in 2014-15, and then again in 2015-16. During those two seasons, he also won the Copa del Rey, as well as the following year, in 2016-17.

Barcelona won the Supercopa in 2016, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2015. But the pinnacle of Enrique's career came when Barcelona defeated Juventus to win the Champions League in 2014-15.

That totals nine major trophies in his career, making Enrique among the most decorated managers at the World Cup in 2022. He also came close to winning his first trophy as Spain manager in 2021, when La Roja lost to France in the Nations League final. They also came within a penalty shootout of reaching the Euro 2020 final, where they were defeated by Italy, who ended up taking the trophy at Wembley.

The Spanish football manager is not his parents' only child. Luis Enrique has two siblings. Luis Enrique's wife and longtime partner is called Elena Cullell, whom he married on December 27, 1997, and together, they have three children.

The first child is their son (Pacho), followed by a daughter (Sira), and the family's last born (Xana). Unfortunately, their daughter Xana succumbed to bone cancer at the age of nine on August 29 2019.
