Jorge began his career in Neuva Chicago before moving to Gimnasia La Plata in 1981. He also played for San Lorenzo and Boca Juniors, then moved to Stade Brestois, France, in 1987.

Higuain also played with his elder brother, Federico, at Inter Miami in 2021. In April 2021, Federico made history after assisting the former Juventus star in scoring in an MLS match. On 14th December 2006, he moved to Real Madrid, aged 19, for $12.8 million and signed a six-and-a-half-year contract. Gonzalo made his Real Madrid debut on 11th January 2007, against Real Betis in the Copa Del Rey match. He scored his first goal on 24th February 2007, in the derby against Atlético Madrid. Pipita spent six and a half seasons at the Bernabeu and won six trophies.

Napoli

Pipita bagged his first goal for the club a few days later in a 4-2 win over Chievo. On 14th May 2016, he scored a hat-trick against Frosinone, breaking Serie A's single-season record of 36 goals. He finished his Napoli career with 91 goals in 146 matches.

Juventus

The Italian giants snatched Gonzalo from Napoli in July 2016 after paying around $88.7 million, making him one of the most expensive transfers in football history. His debut came against Fiorentina on 20th August 2016, where he also netted his first goal in their 2-1 win. Pipita won three Serie A titles and two Coppa Italia titles with Juve.

AC Milan

Pipita moved to AC Milan on a one-year loan deal for $17.7 million, following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus. He made 15 Serie A appearances for the Rossoneri, scoring six goals.

Chelsea

The Argentine joined the Blues on a half-season-long loan in January 2019. He made 14 Premier League appearances, scoring five goals. He then returned to Juventus and played in 32 league games, scoring eight times.

Inter Miami

Pipita terminated his contract at Juve and moved to MLS to join Inter Miami. A few weeks later, his older brother Federico joined him at the club. Gonzalo scored 29 goals in 70 matches for the MLS side before hanging his boots.

The striker debuted for the Argentina national team on 10th October 2009, against Peru. He also played in three World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018). His strike against Belgium in the 2014 FIFA World Cup took Argentina to the semi-final. He was also part of the Argentine squad that lost the 2015 and 2016 Copa America finals to Chile.
