Oleksandr Usyk's biography and career

He won his first three matches at the 2006 European Championships before losing in the semi-finals to Matvey Korobov. He later advanced to light-heavyweight and won the Strandja Cup in 2008.

He moved up another weight class in February 2008 and was assigned to the Olympic qualifier in Roseto Degli Abruzzi, replacing European Champion Denys Poyatsyka. He beat world-class Azeri Elchin Alizade and Daniel Price there.

He defeated Yushan Nijiati in the 2008 Olympic Games by 23-4 but lost to Clemente Russo in the quarter-finals by 4-7. He moved down to light-heavyweight and won gold at the European Championships in 2008, but later returned to heavyweight.

He left amateur boxing with a 33515 record. Before turning professional, he competed as a member of team Ukraine Otamans in the heavyweight division (91+ kg) of the 2012-13 World Series of Boxing (WSB), winning all six of his bouts, two by stoppage.

He made his pro debut in late 2013, at 26, with the Klitschko brothers' K2 Promotions, fighting in the cruiserweight division.

He was born in Simferopol, Crimean Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union, on January 17th 1987, to parents originally from northern Ukraine. His mother was born in the Chernihiv region (in the village of Rybotyn, Korop Raion), while his father was a native of Sumy.

"I don't see how it can have a positive impact when so many people are suffering. I was there for a month and witnessed what happened with my eyes, rockets flying, and fighter jets flying. It's dreadful," commented the unbeaten champion.

"Every day I was there, I prayed, 'Please, God, don't let anyone try to kill me. Please, no one shoots at me. Please don't make me shoot anyone else.'

"I did not want to leave our country. I didn't want to leave our small town. At one point, I went to a hospital where soldiers were being treated for injuries, and they asked me to fight [Joshua] for the country," revealed Usyk.
