Darvin Ham’s family

He is the son of Wilmer Jones, who made history in Saginaw by becoming the city's first female mayor and serving in that capacity from 2001 to 2005. Darvin and his wife Deneitra have three children after 20 years of marriage. Darvin Jr., their eldest son, followed in his father's footsteps on the sports field. His first child works at Northwood University as an assistant men's basketball coach. Donovan and Dominic are the names of their other two sons.

He joined the Thunderbirds in October 2008 and later became their coach.  In October 2011, he joined Mike Brown's player development assistant with the Los Angeles Lakers. He joined the Hawks in 2013.

In 2014 and 2015, He helped lead the Atlanta Hawks to a division title and the 2015 Eastern Conference's top seed. In addition, he flew to Venezuela in June 2011 as a SportsUnited Sports Envoy. He led basketball clinics for 300 underprivileged youngsters and visited Venezuelan sports leaders in this role.

He helped SportsUnited foster worldwide understanding through sport. He then held another series of clinics for 200 Myanmar youth. He became an assistant coach for the Hawks in 2013. He led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference finals in 2015.

He helped the Atlanta Hawks starting five become 2015 NBA All-Stars. In 2018, he followed Mike Budenholzer to Milwaukee, where Budenholzer earned Coach-of-The-Year recognition. In 2020–21, He also coached Milwaukee to its second NBA title, beating the Phoenix Suns in six games in the 2021 NBA Finals. Ham was hired as Lakers coach on June 3, 2022.

He attended Texas Tech University in 1993 after graduating from Saginaw High School. At Texas Tech, he made national headlines when he shattered the backboard with a slam dunk against UNC in the 1996 NCAA Tournament.
