  • The South African One Day International squad to take on Bangladesh in just under two weeks has been named
  • The squad remains as unchanged from the one which famously whitewashed the formidable India last month
  • The unpredictable Bangladeshis pose a serious danger to the Proteas, with crucial points at stake for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League

The South African national men's cricket team will be a strong one as it takes on the dangerously unpredictable Bangladesh in a short One Day International series.

The Proteas will look to negotiate past the Tigers in three ODIs set for the 18th (Friday), 20th (Sunday) and 23rd (Wednesday) of March. Eight of the players in the squad will also be partaking in the Indian Premier League, which will start days later.

Sisanda Magala and Anrich Nortje are the notable exclusions as they missed out because of fitness issues. The dreadfully out-of-form Aiden Markram, who has endured calls for his dropping from the team, made the cut for the series with a lot at stake.

The contest is part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League, which consists of 13 national teams. Thirteen teams participate in the league, of which the top eight teams directly qualify for the next Cricket World Cup, while the bottom five teams advance to the World Cup Qualifier for another chance to qualify.

The Super League replaced the ODI rankings as the route to direct qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Bangladesh currently sits at the top of the table, while the Proteas sit in an unusual and uncomfortable 10th place.

South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (capt), Keshav Maharaj (vice-capt), Quinton de Kock (wk), Zubayr Hamza, Marco Jansen, Janneman Malan, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen, Kyle Verreynne
