Tributes are pouring in for South African boxer, Simiso “Ganda Ganda” Buthelezi.
Buthelezi passed away in hospital, days after collapsing in the ring during a fight for the WBF All Africa Lightweight title.
Boxing SA’s acting CEO Nsikayezwe Sithole confirmed the tragic news, saying that he received a call at midnight to say that the boxer had passed away, Sowetan LIVE reported.
“This is very sad because there seemed to be a glimmer of hope that he was going to recover. The communication we received from King Edward Hospital indicated that he responded by moving his fingers,” Sithole said.
Buthelezi was rushed to hospital on Sunday evening after he collapsed during his fight Siphesihle Mntungwa.
Buthelezi has knocked Mntungwa through the ropes and was on the verge of winning the title when things went wrong. The talented boxer turned toward the referee and threw punches at thin air, clearly not in the right frame of mind.
The fight was called off and Mntungwa was declared the winner by TKO. Buthelezi then collapsed in the ring.
Buthelezi's cause of death has been put down to a brain haemorrhage.
