  • Floyd Mayweather has visited Nigeria and Daniel Amokachi has been accused of being part of those that organised a press conference for the retired boxer
  • Remi Aboderin, the secretary-general of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, says the body was not informed of Mayweather’s visit
  • The boxing promoter called out the organisers, saying it is at the detriment of boxing in the country

The secretary-general of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C) and president of the West African Boxing Union, Remi Aboderin, has accused former Nigerian international Daniel Amokachi of being part of those that organised Floyd Mayweather’s press conference in Nigeria.

Floyd Mayweather reportedly arrived in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of his return to the ring at the skies of Dubai on May 14.

The retired American boxer landed aboard a customised private jet, a convoy of Rolls Royce Wraith, Rolls Royce Cullinan, Bentley Bentayga, 2022 Landcruiser Prado, Mercedes Benz S-class, Mercedes Benz GLE, 2018 Toyota Prado, Toyota Hilux and many more.

The Guardian earlier reported that Mayweather’s itinerary while in Nigeria, according to the organisers, will address the press in Abuja and also pay a courtesy call on Sports Minister, Sunday Dare.

But boxing stakeholder Remi Aboderin called out the organisers, saying Nigeria’s professional boxing body was not aware of Mayweather’s visit.

Aboderin alleged that former footballers Daniel Amokachi and Waidi Akanni were among those behind the idea and that they refused to carry the Board that is in charge of Pro Boxing in Nigeria along.

In his brutal remarks on Facebook, Aboderin said:

“It’s only in Nigeria that people will brazenly want to reap and even reap where they did not sow and nobody will call them to order.
“I am told Daniel Amokachi, Waidi Akanni are part of the people who brought Mayweather to the country for a press conference of a fight in Dubai and they refused to carry the Board that is in charge of Pro Boxing in Nigeria along.
“For photo opportunities, there's nothing Nigerians won't do to the detriment and progress of a sport they know next to nothing about. For sporting activities to progress in the country we need to do things right and not just be unnecessarily star struck.
“What is being done presently with the charade going on in Abuja is not beneficial to the sport of pro boxing apart from the photo Ops these men are after. It's only in Nigeria that such shambolic activities will be allowed and applauded.”

Mayweather to take on Don Moore in Dubai

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Mayweather will take on former sparring partner, Don Moore, on a helipad situated on top of the Burj Al Arab Hotel in Dubai. The top of the hotel is 700 feet above sea level.

The fight is also being billed as the world’s first Non-fungible Tokens (NFT’) sports event because the tickets are only available as NFTs.

The unique event will be billed as The Global Titan Fight Series and will also feature other big names on the card.
