Six teams launched their campaigns in the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference on Friday, 25 April, as the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, Morocco hosted the phase’s opening night. Four of the six competing sides will ultimately advance to the BAL Playoffs in Kigali.
The first contest of the evening produced a milestone for Club Africain, as the Tunisian outfit recorded an 85-79 victory over ASC Ville de Dakar of Senegal in their BAL debut. Omar Abada and Jesse Jones Jr. each posted 21 points to drive Club Africain’s performance, while the team also held a decisive rebounding advantage, outrebounding Dakar 42-33. Samba Fall was the standout contributor for the Senegalese champions, finishing with 20 points, though his efforts were not enough to prevent a late deficit from proving fatal.
In the evening’s second fixture, host side FUS Rabat produced a commanding display against fellow debutants JCA Kings of Côte d’Ivoire, running out 85-55 winners in front of a capacity home crowd. The Moroccan champions established a substantial lead before the interval and did not relent in the second half. Abdoulaye Harouna top-scored for FUS Rabat with 16 points, while Anthony Pritchard contributed 13 points and six rebounds. JCA Kings, led by Jonathan Cisse, encountered persistent difficulties on the offensive end, shooting at a field goal percentage of just 34 percent across the contest.
The results from opening night reflect the broader competitive structure of the Sahara Conference, where every result carries weight given that two of the six teams will be eliminated before the Kigali playoffs. The conference format places a premium on consistency from the outset, making the opening-night performances from both Club Africain and FUS Rabat significant early indicators.
According to Pulse Sports, the Sahara Conference schedule continues on Saturday, with Maktown Flyers of Nigeria scheduled to face JCA Kings at 3:00 p.m. GMT+1, followed by a rematch of sorts as Club Africain take on ASC Ville de Dakar again at 6:00 p.m. GMT+1. The Nigerian side, Maktown Flyers, are yet to play and will be looking to make their mark early in the standings.
The BAL, which is operated as a joint venture between the NBA and the Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA), continues to expand its footprint across the African continent. Now in its 2026 edition, the league has grown to include clubs from an increasingly broad range of African nations, with JCA Kings and Club Africain both making their competition debuts this season. Morocco has served as a host nation for BAL conference-stage games in previous seasons, with Rabat’s Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex establishing itself as a reliable venue for the league.
