Tobi Amusan Reveals Staggering Amount She Took As Loan to Prepare for 2022 World Championships

World record holder in the Women’s 100m Hurdles, Tobi Amusan, has disclosed that she had to take a loan of $50,000 loan to prepare for the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

The 25-year-old said this to newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday, September 22, as she returns home a week after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari.

The World Athletics ratified her 12.12 seconds finish at the world championship semi-final as the new world record.

She became the first Nigerian to win gold at the World Athletics Championships, storming to an incredible 12.06 seconds in the final — but a strong in-race tailwind which was higher than allowed meant it was not acknowledged.

Amusan disclosed that she is prone to injuries and had to take the loan to stay in shape ahead of the competition.

She said, as per The Cable:

“Yes, definitely. I’ve got injuries a couple of times.
“There was so much I needed to do when it comes to my health as a professional athlete, and staying on top of my game required a lot of funding.”

She consolidated her feat with a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games before retaining her Diamond League title to put a brilliant wrap on her season.

Amusan received $100,000 for breaking the world record in Oregon. She also earned $30,000 for retaining her Diamond League title.

President Buhari honours Team Nigeria members

Sports Brief earlier reported that President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the sum of N200million for members of Team Nigeria that made the country proud at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and World Athletics championships.

A special reception was held to honour the record-breaking athletes at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, September 15.

Buhari stated that his administration is committed to rewarding excellence as he congratulated all the awardees and recipients, expressing confidence that this will spur them to greater heights.
