Tragedy Darkens 2022 Comrades Marathon as Runner Passes Away

It is with sadness that Sports Brief reports that a participant passed away while participating in the Comrades Marathon yesterday.

Mzamo Mthembu died after collapsing on his from Pietermaritzburg to Durban in what was the 'down run' of the race.

IOL reported that he fell while in the Pinelands area, before succumbing to complications at Westville Hospital where he was taken.

A club statement read:

“It is with a heavy heart (that we) announce the passing of Hollywoodbets Athletics Club athlete Mzamo Mthembu, from the Toti branch, who was doing the Comrades Marathon yesterday. He had complications along the route and collapsed in Pinetown and was taken to Westville Hospital where he sadly passed away."

The club also sent its condolences to his family and friends.

KwaZulu-Natal premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube joined in mourning Mthembu, saying:

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones during the race yesterday. May the souls of the departed rest in peace."

Regarding Ncube's words, Sports Brief could not establish if any other runners passed away during the marathon. Netcare 911 confirmed to IOL that a helicopter ambulance had been activated to attend to a participant who took ill on the M13.

A family member told the publication that the runner is still at an unnamed hospital, and will be attended to by specialists today.

South Africa’s Tete Dijana storms to victory in the 2022 edition of Comrades Marathon

South Africa’s Tete Dijana has won the 2022 edition of the Comrades Marathon.

As reported by Sports Brief, the Nedbank runner stormed to victory, beating his teammate and defending champion, Edward Mothibi. Dijana, a security guard from the North West, finished the race at 5:30:38 while Mothibi finished at 5:33:46.

Nedbank Running Club’s dominance in the event was highlighted by the fact that five of the top ten all belonged to the club.
