Barry Holland is proving that running the Comrades is for everyone.

The 70-year-old athlete finished his 48th Comrades Marathon in a row in a time of 11:44:39.

Speaking after the race, Barry said that there were times he didn’t think he would make it as he was cramping very badly along the route. He also had blood ad scrapes on his knee, evidence of a fall along the route.

Despite the difficult conditions, Barry pushed through to finish the race and earn his 47th medal.

Barry had wise words for youngsters out there who wanted to take on the Ultimate Human Race.

“Running Comrades is not impossible, it’s just building up layer upon layer. It’s quite amazing how you will get there.”

He added that at 70 years old it was getting hard, but for the youngsters, they could still do it.

The Comrades Marathon this year attracted over 14 000 athletes who took on the challenge of running from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

Earlier in the day, South Africa’s Tete Dijana won the men’s race while Russia’s Alexandra Morozova took the title in the women’s race.

South Africa’s Tete Dijana has won the 2022 edition of the Comrades Marathon.

The Nedbank runner stormed to victory, beating his teammate and defending champion, Edward Mothibi.

The duo were neck and neck with not too long to go before Dijana took control of the race and never looked back.

Russian runner Alexandra Morozova wins women's 2022 Comrades Marathon despite controversy

Alexandra Morozova put a sideshow aside to emerge victorious in the 2022 Comrades Marathon today.

The Russian runner finished the grueling race in a time of 06:17:46.

She thanked the people of South Africa for their warm reception and the amazing atmosphere as she ran into the stadium.
