Incredible Nigerian athlete Tobi Amusan managed to hold back tears while the Nigerian national anthem played after she won gold at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The 25-year-old set a new Commonwealth Games record in the Women’s 100m Hurdles after crossing the finish line in 12.30s.

This comes barely two weeks after she became the first Nigerian athlete to win a World Athletics Championship gold as she stormed to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles in Oregon.

Amusan, who had obliterated the world record in an astonishing semi-final where she clocked 12.12sec, powered over the line at Hayward Field in 12.06sec.

Recall that her emotions overcame her while the national anthem played at the World Athletics Championships as she let out tears of joy.

But this time in Birmingham, she struggled to hold her breath for the duration that the Nigerian national anthem played and then let out a big smile in the end.

Tobi Amusan shattered the Games Record at the Commonwealth Games, taking the win in the women's 100mH with a brilliant 12.30s (-0.2) ahead of Devyne Charlton who was 2nd in 12.58s, just edging Cindy Sember in 3rd with 12.59s.

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria now has 10 gold medals at the Commonwealth Games as well as 8 silver and 13 bronze medals to have a total of 33.

They are currently sixth on the overall medals table.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo wins gold in Powerlifting

Meanwhile, Nigerian athlete Folashade Oluwafemiayo smashed her world record to win gold in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham Powerlifting event.

The Paralympic champion was spectacular on Day 7 as she lifted a new world record of 155kg to clinch the gold medal.

It was her first-ever gold medal at the Commonwealth Games as she inspired Nigerian first and second finishes.

Paul Amoah wins bronze in Men’s 200m

Sports Brief earlier reported that Joseph Paul Amoah won bronze in the 200m final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Ghanaian sprinter clocked a time of 20.49 to finish behind Zharnel Zughes and Jareem Richards of England and Trinidad and Tobago respectively.

Amoah got off to a great start but could not beat the times by the English and Trinidadian runners.
