Team Nigeria has secured its first gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, courtesy of Olarinoye Adijat.

Adijat lifted a total of 203kg for accumulated lifts, to set the game’s record in the category after lifting 92kg for her second take.

Nigerian outlet The Cable reports that the 22-year-old almost missed out on the gold medal in the final lift due to a technical issue, but she proved enough to send her top of the podium.

It was gathered that India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam secured the silver medal while Fraer Morrow of England got the bronze.

In another category, Team Nigeria's Stella Peter Kingsley narrowly missed out on a podium finish in the women’s 49 weightlifting event.

She finished fourth behind India’s Chanu Saikhom Mirabai, Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa of Mauritius and Canada’s Hannah Kaminski, who shared the medals respectively in ascending order.

Meanwhile, Team Africa will continue its charge for gold medals on day four of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

There were gold medals for the likes of Victor Kiplagat, Lara van Niekerk and Pieter Coetzee in swimming and the likes of Tatjana van Niekerk, Chad Le Clos, and the Blitzboks are the standout medal threats.

Team Nigeria makes giant entry into athlete’s village

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria created a sensational scene as they made a giant entry during the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Birmingham.

A very large crowd of athletes and officials watched as the Nigerian team hoisted the national flag at the athlete's village as Kizz Daniel’s trending song ‘Buga’ reverberated in the arena.

Although it was meant to be a small ceremony, big athletes from other countries joined in dancing to the song.

Uganda’s marathoner Victor Kiplangat wins gold

Sports Brief earlier reported that Ugandan marathoner Victor Kiplangat stole the headlines after he bagged a gold medal in the men's marathon despite running the wrong way.

It is understood that Kiplangat took a wrong turn nearly a mile away from the finishing line, a blunder that almost cost him the gold medal.

Fortunately for the Ugandan, he had established a strong lead against his opponents and went on to finish the race one minute and 34 seconds earlier than his closest challenger.
