Kehinde Amusan who is the father of world champion Tobi Amusan has stated emphatically that he never supported his daughter in the early stages of her career as an athlete.

In many nations in Africa, the target of parents is to send their children to schools where they believe they would excel and be able to take care of their families.

It is no longer a news that Tobi Amusan has recorded her name in the history books of athletics following her success at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon where she won gold in 100 meter.

According to the report on Punch who exclusively interviewed Tobi Amusan's father, Kehinde explained that things were hard years back to the level of him finding it difficult to pay Tobi's school fees.

''As a teacher with a meagre salary, we struggled to feed and pay school fees. It was not easy. We usually gathered whatever we had to support her. Her mother did a lot for her.
''Before I could help, her mother would have done it almost all the time. We did all we could to help her career in sports. While I was growing up, no one cheered me when I played football.''

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how world 100m hurdling champion, Tobi Amusan, disclosed how her father nearly ended her running career as a young girl growing up in Nigeria.

Amusan made history on Sunday by becoming the first Nigerian to win a World Athletics Championship gold, going on to set a new world record.

Amusan revealed that her mother had to shield her from her dad, who burnt her training kit after finding out she avoided church to train.

Despite the hindrance, the 25-year-old persevered to see her dreams of becoming a world champion become a reality.
