Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala is officially Africa's fastest man after clocking 9.93 seconds to bag gold in the 100 metres race at the 22nd African Senior Athletics Championships in Port-Louis, Mauritius.

Omanyala shattered the Championship Record of 9.94secs set in 1998 to ink his name in history books on Thursday, June 9.

The 26-year-old had already shown intent to break the long-standing record as he sailed to the finals with ease during the qualifiers.

Omanyala sets up showdown clash with Akani Simbine

Omanyala's victory in the heats saw him set up a showdown clash with South Africa's Akani Simbine who went into the race as the defending champion.

However, it was Omanyala who eventually emerged the victor to clinch the continental title.

His victory was a bone of contention as it was too close to call as the two athletes appeared to have crossed the line at the same time.

But it was Omanyala who was eventually adjudged to be the winner, becoming the first sprinter in Kenya to win the continental crown in 34 years.

Ferdinand Omanyala confident of breaking Usai Bolt's record

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala has set his sights on breaking Jamaican icon Usain Bolt's world record in the 100m.

Bolt's name went into the history books back in 2009 during the IAAF World Championships in Berlin after he posted 9.58 seconds.

While the record stands to date, American sprinter Christian Coleman came close to breaking the record three years ago.

However, Omanyala contends that he has all it takes to outdo Bolt and set a new world record.

The 26-year-old currently holds the record for Africa's fastest man after he clocked 9.77 seconds during a previous event.
